Thomas Wesley Pentz, better known by his stage name Diplo, is one man who does not seem to stop. Whether he’s touring the world as Diplo or with the Major Lazer crew, managing and picking up new talent for his label Mad Decent, putting together his weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 Diplo & Friends, producing for himself or for others, or setting up meetings with the highest of business men in the world displaying the strength of his grip upon the EDM community, Diplo is always absolutely everywhere in the world which can be seen on his extremely entertaining Instagram account. When you’re doing everything and then some, tacking on one more task just isn’t a problem anymore so when Vulture asked him to create the ultimate summer-barbeque soundtrack he, in turn, sent them back a 102 track, 6-hour playlist. His playlist features the likes of many household Mad Decent names such as Baauer and Dillon Francis, yet expands beyond his own realm with big names such as Dogblood, Disclosure, Daft Punk, RL Grime, GTA, A-Trak, TNGHT, and even Vampire Weekend. However, most of the tracks (as you can see in the tracklist below) may be by artists who are unfamiliar to you. When asked by inthemix who he’s tipping for success, Diplo replied, “I love any of these kids who just love all kinds of music and are making everything so well – hip-hop and trap better than the biggest producers, big room house better than the big room house guys. This is what’s happening right now with these young kids: they’re just doing everything.” As the forefather for a lot of what dance music stands for today, I’m sure Diplo couldn’t be prouder of the kids especially those under his watchful eye such as DJ Snake, Ryan Hemsworth, and What So Not for doing more for music, in his opinion, then many of the biggest names in the industry.
